A care guide in plain words

What happens when I seek care?

Think of the visit as an assessment: a chance to work out the problem and discuss options. Bring questions, not a fixed shopping list.

Your treatment conversation notes

Before the conversation

Write down the reason for the visit in your own words. List the medicines and supplements you use. Bring the treatment name or ad you want to discuss.

Note what has already been tried and what was difficult. Leave space on the page for the clinician's answers.

Questions beyond a treatment menu

Make room for more questions

In May 2026, the group representing state medical boards said choosing a treatment from an online menu is not enough. A clinician still needs to assess the patient. The group also said patients need a chance to put their own questions to the clinician.

These are recommendations from the group of medical boards. They are not an Illinois law. Illinois's own rules decide what a clinician is legally required to do.

Ask why the proposed treatment fits the problem. Ask what else could be considered, including deciding against medicine.

If the assessment needs more

If tests or an examination are needed

The medical boards' recommendations say a doctor needs to arrange any tests that the assessment calls for. Another option is to refer the patient to a person who can carry out those tests.

A referral means sending you to another health professional. Ask where that next step would happen and who pays for it.

Before leaving, ask who reviews results, how to get answers between visits, and when the plan will be reconsidered.

Write down any words you do not understand. Ask for the plain version while the person who used them is still there.
