A care guide in plain words
Will my plan pay?
Give your insurer the medicine's exact name and explain the reason for treatment. Ask for your own payment, not just whether the drug is on a list.
Your plan's medicine approval process
What does approval from the insurer mean?
The plan calls its medicine list a formulary. Prior authorisation is the step where the plan agrees to cover the proposed use.
For Medicare drug coverage, a medicine used for a covered condition may qualify even when use just for weight loss does not, as of September 26, 2026.
Being eligible for coverage does not promise payment; the plan still applies its medicine list and approval process.
Weight medicines through the temporary programme
A temporary Medicare route
The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge was offering certain weight medicines to eligible adults at a monthly copay of $50, starting July 1, 2026 and ending December 31, 2027, as checked September 26, 2026.
A copay is your part of the medicine bill. GLP-1 names the group of medicines covered by this programme. It does not mean the programme covers every medicine in that group.
To qualify under the September 26, 2026 requirements, you need to be at least 18 and have Medicare drug coverage through an accepted plan. Whether you qualify also depends on your weight and other health problems. You need a prescription and approval before getting the medicine. Not every Medicare member qualifies.
Eligibility beside the payment rules
Ask which route applies to you
The Bridge excludes people who have type 2 diabetes, under its rules checked September 26, 2026. They need to ask their Medicare drug plan about its usual coverage instead. Also, you are excluded from the Bridge in 2026 if your Medicare drug plan has already paid for your GLP-1 medicine that year.
The September 26, 2026 terms put the Bridge outside Medicare's usual drug benefit. Its $50 monthly payment does not count toward your usual yearly limit on medicine spending. Reaching that limit for your other medicines does not remove the Bridge's $50 payment.
Ask the clinician prescribing the medicine and your plan whether you qualify. Ask which medicine is covered and which forms are needed. Keep their written answer with the full cost quote.
