A care guide in plain words
Can I have the visit from home?
Telehealth is care given across a phone, video, or other remote connection. Ask what the visit will involve before paying for it.
Illinois permission for remote visits
Your location matters
As of September 28, 2026, Illinois requires a clinician treating you remotely while you are in the state to have Illinois permission to practise.
The Illinois rule lists a few exceptions. One covers occasional talks between an Illinois-licensed doctor and a doctor outside Illinois. Another covers a second opinion given to an Illinois-licensed doctor. A third covers care in Illinois after treatment began in the state where the doctor holds a licence. The law also mentions care for an existing patient while the doctor or patient is travelling. This list does not tell you whether your own visit qualifies for an exception.
If a service says an exception applies to your visit, ask it to explain which rule allows that visit.
Tell the service your physical location for the visit. If you expect to travel, ask about that before arranging follow-up.
An assessment across the screen
The visit still needs proper care
In the Illinois rules checked September 28, 2026, remote care must meet the standards used for an in-person visit and stay within the clinician's licensed role.
Ask how the clinician will assess you, and what happens if they need to examine you in a room.
Enough information to prescribe?
Ask about a form-only visit
Illinois's telehealth definitions include phone and video connections, as well as records sent for later review, as of September 28, 2026.
A phone call or an online form may fit the definition of remote care. That does not mean it gives the clinician enough information to prescribe a particular medicine.
Ask who reads your answers, how to ask your own questions, and how any missing information will be gathered.
Illinois law also requires care by phone or screen to follow state and federal rules that protect patient information, as checked September 28, 2026.
